DNC Convention Day 1 is About the New Family Values: Reaction from KAYA

PHILADELPHIA, PA — KAYA: Filipino Americans for Progress was in Philadelphia on Monday, July 25, 2016 for the first day of the Democratic National Committee’s 2016 National Convention, where former Secretary Hillary Clinton will accept the party’s nomination for president of the United States.

During the day, KAYA members attended the AAPI Caucus, rallying in support of issues affecting all AAPI communities and to mobilize the communities’ votes in support of Secretary Clinton in November.

The first day of the national convention included electrifying speeches by party heavyweights First Lady Michelle Obama and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, as well as progressive heroes such as Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Senator Sanders’ speech and endorsement of Secretary Clinton was particularly important as the party moves on from a contentious primary contest between him and Secretary Clinton.

The night’s speeches and events were important in significantly moving the party towards unity in opposition to the Republicans and Donald Trump in November.

Party members particularly coalesced around a new vision of “family values,” one built around progressive goals of providing quality health care and education to children, protecting everyone from senseless gun violence, keeping immigrant families together through sensible and comprehensive immigration reform, ensuring equality for all women in the workforce, and inclusion and acceptance of families of any shape or sizes.

“Tonight was a testament to the party’s goal of representing American families and progressive family values,” said Romeo Ymalay, KAYA National Co-Chair. “Under the leadership of Secretary Clinton, we will become stronger together and we will rise together as our government becomes more responsive to the needs of all families, not just those at the very top. As then First Lady Hillary Clinton said more than 25 years ago and current First Lady Michelle Obama said again last night, ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’”

The DNC convention’s second day will focus on Secretary Clinton’s life-long fight to make a difference in the lives of children across the country. Headliners will include former President Bill Clinton and the mothers of Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland, who were victims of excessive policing and police brutality against unarmed black men and women.
